Jean-Michel Othoniel's Precious Stonewall series builds on his poetic investigations into glass as well as his rigorous architectural research. The genesis of the piece can be traced to 2010 when Othoniel conducted his first research trip to India, travelling to Firozabad to study with local craftspeople and learn their glass-making traditions. He observed them working as close as possible to the materials and the furnaces. These moments of creation, born of this close physical contact between the molten glass and the glassblower suffering in the sweltering heat, moved him deeply. India changed everything he thought he knew about glassmaking. Ever since this memorable experience, he has created giant walls of glass bricks built using Indian techniques.
