The question of gender assignment has recently received media attention after North Carolina repealed an anti-discrimination law aimed at allowing access to public bathrooms based on an individual's personal sexual identity, rather than their sex determined at birth. The argument is based on the sexist notion that women (and children) need to have protected status in our patriarchal society and that men (penis toting individuals) are a threat to their safety. The irony is that almost all assaults spinning out of this controversy have been committed against, not committed by, transgender persons.
