There are a couple of themes in this piece. Foremost, it references the separations that were forced upon African American couples while in bondage - or put differently the "bonds of matrimony" had a different historical context for Blacks than it has had for Whites. The piece also has wheels attached, alluding to the "Great Migration" that occurred as Blacks eventually fled the South for Northern Cities.
