The chromatic grounds were a concept originally introduced into Leslie's work as part of her black and white Riffs on Real Time series. The most recent Riffs series was the first time Hewitt de-saturated, the Riffs on Real Time photographs, meaning that the works were photographed in color and then had their hue removed. The colored grounds are not photographs, nor digitally produced, but rather the result of Hewitt's process in the dark room, where she introduces the surface of the photo paper to light in a variety of ways to achieve these colorful compositions. Combining the colored grounds with the desaturated Riffs on Real Time photographs was meant to encourage viewers to think about the colors in the photograph that aren't visibly present.
