Mel Bochner is recognized for pioneering Conceptual art in the 1960s and 70s. Emerging at a time when painting was often discussed as outmoded, Bochner became part of a new generation of artists, including Eva Hesse and Donald Judd, who were looking at ways of breaking with traditional compositional devices. His introduction of language in the visual led Harvard art historian Benjamin Buchloh to describe his 1966 Working Drawings as 'probably the first truly conceptual exhibition'.
