Detail from 'The American Dream:' 'This artwork, generated by a commission for a homage to Picasso portfolio, marked a new departure for Indiana. For a decade, Indiana had made paintings, the most popular of which became prints. Pressed for time, Indiana could not create a painting for the commission so a paper collage design generated the print, which was so popular that Indiana later decided to make a Picasso painting. This painting was, in effect, generated by a print. Indiana took Picasso for a biographic ride similar to his tact in his Auto portraits.
