ROBERT MOTHERWELL (1915-1991) A leading exponent of American abstract expressionism, Robert Motherwell has served as a vital spokesman for the avant-garde of the mid-twentieth century. He introduced the term "Abstract Expressionism" into the United States, and helped crystallize the direction of the new movement with his painting and writing. An abstractionist from the beginning of his career, Motherwell worked primarily in the medium of collages. To this day, his works are collected world-wide, and are included in every major exhibition of American abstract art.
