Nara's work reflects his childhood, where he spent a lot of his time alone with only his imagination, comic books and family pets. As a result there are multiple images of seemingly innocent, wide-eyed children and dogs in attempts to capture the sense of boredom and frustration he felt as a child. His images have a childlike simplicity about them juxtaposed by the scenes his figures find themselves in, frequently irritated and angry, but also vulnerable and sad.
