The stag wears a collar decorated with arabesques, adorned by a cartouche with an eglomised coat of arms. Drinking vessels in the form of animals enjoyed great popularity in the 16th and 17th centuries. They were decorative pieces as well as being used for special occasions. Their design often indicated their intended use and location. Stag goblets like this were often seen in hunting lodges.
