Notes: Overall good condition with scattered scuffs, light scratches, and oxidation commensurate with age. Notes: Agustín Cárdenas was a Cuban artist who spent much of hiscareer in Paris. Born in Matanzas, Cuba, the descendant of enslavedpeople from Senegal and the Congo, Cárdenas studied with one of thegreatest Cuban sculptors of the century, Juan José Sicre, and beganexhibiting his work in the 1940s. By 1957 he was living in Paris, afull-fledged member of the Surrealist movement. His sculptures showthe influence of African sculpture and Dogon totems, acutely evidentin this work. The curving, organic lines crafted with masterfulprecision invoke the vertical power of the totem, guiding the eye upand down the sculpture.
