Auctionata: Photography & Prints Recap

March 30, 2015

At Auctionata auction house in Berlin, Photography & Prints auction took place on Friday, March 27. The whole 20th Century was covered, but there were also photos and prints from 21st Century, up to present time. Lots at this Photography & Prints auction did not have their low and high estimates before the beggining, but they had starting and estimated prices instead. This way, not a single lot was sold bellow respective starting price, but many lots were left unsold.

Auctionata: Photography & Prints – The Overview

There were 172 lots auctioned on Friday at Auctionata Berlin, but we will focus on 140 contemporary lots. Out of those 140, 73 lots were sold, or just 52.1 percent of total. Six lots went over their estimated values (4.3 percent of total, or 8.2 percent of sold lots), and the rest of 67 was sold in range between their starting prices and estimated values (91.8 percent). The total of 73 sold lots gathered $106,023 (the sum of hammer prices). That was for $50,000 lower than the sum of estimated values, or -32.3 percent difference, and $28,000 above the sum of starting prices (+35.4 percent difference).

The Most Successful Lots at Auctionata: Photography & Prints – The Overview

Peter H. Fürst’s Portfolio ‘Die Hüte der Olga Gasteiger’ from 1980 had the biggest hammer price of the evening with $7,004, almost $500 above the starting price, but $6,000 bellow estimated price. Two works by Umbo (Otto Umbehr) were estimated at $8,717 each (Tea for Two and Skatrunde), but were sold for $5,359 each. Gerhard Richter’s Victoria I + II from 1987 was one of the rare lots, one of six, that got their hammer price above the estimated value – it was estimated at $3,487 and was sold for $5,067 (+45.3 percent difference between hammer price and estimated value). Charles Fazzino’s Money Doesn’t Grow from 2000 was sold for $300 more than the starting price (it was estimated at $8,717, and changed hands for $4,669), and Carlos Cruz-Diez’s Op-Art-Composition from 1997 had its starting price at $872, estimated value at $1,743, and was sold for almost three times more – $4,503 (+158.3 percent difference between estimated value and hammer price). Yue Minjun’s Sheep Herd was estimated at $4,358, and was sold for $4,203. Finally, the only other lot that was sold above $4,000 was Gerhard Richter’s Kanarische Landschaften II from 1971 – it was estimated at $1,961, and changed owners for $4,053 (+106.7 percent difference).

The Unsold Ones

Almost half of lots weren’t sold at Auctionata Berlin on Friday. Amongst them, Ernst Fuchs’ Sleeping Angel had the biggest estimated value – $13,075. HR Giger’s Biomechanoid was estimated at $10,896, Asger Jorn’s Das offene Versteck at $7,627 and Ryan McGuinness’ Cultural Belief Systems at $6,537 – and none of them changed hands. Out of eight André de Dienes’ works, only two were sold, none of three works by Leni Riefenstahl, and neither of two works by Zao Wou-Ki.

Please scroll down and take a look at detailed information of every contemporary lot that was auctioned at Auctionata Berlin on March 27.
