A philosophy graduate interested in theory, politics and art. Alias of Jelena Martinović.

Ever since it was established in 2011, fotofever offers amateurs, collectors, artists, gallery owners and other art professionals the best of emerging contemporary photography from around the world. The fair’s founder Cécile Schall started it with the idea to encourage everyone to collect photography and support artists during their lifetime. The fair now returns to the Carrousel du Louvre for its 7th edition in Paris, bringing together 100 galleries and publishers from 20 countries and presenting 250 artists.

Artistics, a Paris-based online gallery where art lovers and collectors can discover and support selected independent artists from around the world, will take part in the fair with a duo show with photographers Christian Houge and Xavier Dumoulin, engaged in a dialogue between shade and light.

The Light of Xavier Dumoulin

A French-based photographer, Xavier Dumoulin focuses on environmental problems humanity is facing and reveals the growing dichotomy between human beings and their environment in a very poetic way. His images show the human presence as something that has grown into a burden for nature.

On the light side, the exhibition at fotofever presents the artist’s series Incandescences: Xavier Dumoulin taken between the Normandy coast and the Nice inland region during full moon nights at remote towns or villages. Dealing with light pollution, which obscures the sight of a starry night, Dumoulin captures these urban environments transfigured by artificial lighting in a way that evokes molten lava flows. As the photographer explained himself, “light which is supposed to comfort us has become an increasingly close-knit fence preventing us from seeing what is essential and maintaining us in a state of illusion”.

The Shade of Christian Houge

A Norway-based photographer, Christian Houge explores the relationship between nature and culture, focusing on the boundaries between the artificial order created by human beings and their metaphorical as well as physical relationships to their environment.

On the shade side, the exhibition features Houge’s Okurimono series, in which the artist explores Japan’s subcultures and its ritualistic perfection. He creates stories through staging to explore delicate themes such as personal identity, sexuality, longing and gender dysphoria, at the same time making the viewer’s associations an intrinsic part of the work. The series will be exhibited as part of the fair’s JAPONOGRAPHIE program which celebrates the 160th anniversary of the France-Japan diplomatic relations.
