Christie's: First Open / LDN Auction Analysis

March 29, 2015

On Thursday, March 26, at Christie’s auction house in London an auction of Post-War and Contemporary art First Open / LDN has been held. This auction in South Kensington, among other paintings, contained an important private Asian collection, and had focused on several important works by Lee Ufan and Yayoi Kusama. Apart from them, Alexander Calder’s, Fredrik Værslev’s, Georg Baselitz’s and Otto Piene’s works had pretty successful sales in, overall, pretty calm auction, where hammer prices did not deviate much from their estimated ranges.

Christie's
Otto Piene – Big Black Seed, 1967 (Lot 57)

Christie’s: First Open / LDN – The Overview

Out of 194 total lots at Christe’s First Open / LND, 153 were sold, or pretty good 78.9 percent. Out of those 153, 48 lots changed hands for prices that were above their high estimated values (24.7 percent of total, or 31.4 percent of sold lots). Statistically, most sold lots had hammer prices in range of estimated values (56 lots, or 36.6 percent of sold lots), and the rest of 49 lots were sold under their low estimated prices (32 percent of sold lots). All in all, 153 lots were sold for total of $2.92 million, which was $420,000 short of the sum of high estimates, but more than $600,000 above the sum of low estimates. In fact, the sum of hammer prices for sold lots was a hair above ($14,000) the sum of low estimates for all lots – the sold and the unsold ones.

Christie's
Mario Merz – Seifenblasende Kuh (Soap Blowing Cow), circa 1980 (detail) (Lot 71)

The Winners of Christie’s: First Open / LDN

The biggest hammer price of the day had Lee Ufan’s From Line No 780231, that was sold for $282,530. However, that was not as good result as was expected. The estimated range for this lot was $296,400 – $444,600, so the hammer price had -36.5 percent difference between the hammer price and the high estimated price, and -4.7 percent difference on its low estimate. Also, this was the only lot that was sold for more than $200,000. The next highest hammer price had Fredrik Værslev’s Untitled (Canopy), which was sold for $133,830, which was significantly better than the estimated range ($88,920 – $118,560). Alexander Calder’s Népal was very successful, as it achieved hammer price that doubled high estimate – the estimated range was $37,050 – $51,870, and it was sold for $104,090. Another Ufan’s work, From Point No 780101, was sold for $86,246 just bellow high estimate ($88,920), while Otto Piene’s Big Black Seed changed owners for price that was way above high estimate – it was sold for $74,350, and the estimated range was $32,604 – $41,496. Georg Baselitz’s Albert Einstein went for $74,350, just $250 above low estimate, and Mario Merz’s Seifenblasende Kuh (Soap Blowing Cow) was sold for $66,915, or with +50.5 percent difference on its high estimate. When we talk about that difference, the most successful lot was Hermann Goepfert’s Untitled, with +276.3 percent (sold for $44,610). Gerhard Richter’s Bouquet ($16,357) had + 267.9 percent difference, Anish Kapoor’s Untitled ($4,461) had +201 and Zbigniew Rogalski’s Death of Partisan 1 ($8,178) had +175.9 percent difference.

Christie's
Lee Ufan – From Point No. 780101, 1978 (detail) (Lot 24)

The Unsold and the Unsuccessful Ones

Matthew Day Jackson’s Anatormica Man was estimated $51,870 – $66,690 and wasn’t sold – it was the highest estimated lot that didn’t change owners at Christie’s auction. Günther Förg’s Untitled and Doug Aitken’s plateau both had the same estimated range ($44,460 – $59,280), and both went unsold. When it comes to the biggest (negative) difference between hammer prices and low estimates, Till Gerhard’s Wochenendhaus (Weekend House) had -85 percent difference, and Mat Chivers’ Home was even worse with -89.9 percent difference.

Please, scroll down to see the detailed information for every lot that was on auction on Wednesday at Christie’s.
