June 18, 2015

Very interesting auction took place on Monday, June 15th 2015 at Cornette de Saint Cyr in Paris. Prints and Multiples auction brought together works by masters of modern and contemporary art – from Paul Gaugin and Pablo Picasso to Jeff Koons and Shepard Fairey. The auction featured prints from both 20th and 21st century. Out of 431 lots offered at the auction, a solid number of 276 were sold, gathering $411,779. The highlight of the auction were prints of Andy Warhol‘s Mao and Pablo Picasso’s Tete De Femme Couronnee De Fleurs that were sold for $39,339 and $30,347, respectively.

Andy Warhol – Mao

Starting in the early 1970s, the Pop artist made hundreds of images of Mao Zedong, using a portrait of the leader from the Little Red Book, a propaganda collection of Mao’s speeches and quotations from the Cultural Revolution, as his template. These portraits are probably the most famous works by Andy Warhol. Warhol showed a great deal of interest in the Chinese political situation in 1971, and soon he began to paint Mao’s portraits. Warhol’s Maos are endlessly varied—ferocious, parodic, and beautiful—gestures of paint smeared onto the reproduced outline of the Chinese leader’s head and shoulders.
