Damien Hirst Brings his Portfolios of Love Heart Prints to Galerie Fluegel-Roncak
Life is the dominant factor in Damien Hirst’s art. Always with a twist, and always with the reference to the dark side, Hirst’s work, for sure, has raised more than one eyebrow in the art world. This time, Damien Hirst, with his new exhibition at the Galerie Fluegel-Roncak in Nuremberg, presents for us yet another story of Love. His exhibition I LOVE YOU and PSALMS, showcases a portfolio of love heart prints, each foil blocked, you might have guessed it, with a single butterfly. All art, for the artist, is about life and death and the need for attention. Most famous, wealthiest artist alive, this time, presents his work with the use of the popular silkscreen technique and application of gold leafs.
The Challenging Nature
Looking for universal triggers, like the fact that everybody loves butterflies, or quirky things, Damien Hirst seems to trick us all to engage with his pieces and to attempt and bring a certain meaning to them. Explaining “Art’s about life and it can’t really be about anything else … there isn’t anything else,” the artist has focused his work in the attempt of challenging the contemporary belief systems. The response to his art is often mixed, but regardless of what is thought about this British artist, Hirst is considered to be the most prominent contemporary artist present in the current art scene. With his art, Hirst has not only questioned the functionality of art, materials used and themes covered but issues around plagiarism are for sure associated with this artist.
The Hearts and The Butterflies
Since the late 1980s, Hirst has used a varied practice of installation, sculpture, painting and drawing to explore the complex relationship between art, life, and death. Using universal images, that often trigger a scope of universal beliefs, Hirst attempts to grab the viewer’s attention. This time, the love hearts, butterflies and gold leafs are the dominant images that make up his new exhibition presenting to the public two portfolios; the first one entitled LOVE Gold and the second Love Silver. Eight of the hearts of the first portfolio are silkscreened and the six are created with the application of the gold leaf. Could it be, that with the title of his portfolios and the use of gold leaf, Hirst is commenting upon the fact that money and wealth often are considered as factors that complicate love? Maybe this is the dark twist that is always apparent in Hirst’s work.
