Problem solved by Deedee Cheriel! Obey Clothing previously collaborated with street artists on several occasions, creating fashion lines signed by Cleon Peterson, COPE2 and Suicidal Tendencies (yes, the band).
Nalini Cheriel called Deedee is an illustration artist who began as a record cover and T-shirt designer in the early 90’s Oregon music scene. Originally from Eugene, OR, she was influenced by the overwhelming hippie culture of her environment, and she started her own band when she was only 19. Expressing her creativity through various channels, she played in several bands (Juned, Adickdid, The Teenangels, The Hindi Guns) and filmed a movie inspired by her own story to an extent, titled Down and Out with the Dolls. Deedee expanded her skills and experience by living and studying outside the country in Chile, England, Honduras, her native India, Portugal and Spain. Deedee Cheriel is now a resident of LA, where she continues to explore the issues related to the human needs and desires to connect to peers by portraying imperatives and problems arisen from these urges. Her depictions ooze humor, emotion and some awkwardness, but they are largely optimistic. The eclectic style of Deedee Cheriel is composed by leaning onto many references, from religious imagery of Eastern India, to punk aesthetics and amazing landscapes of the American Northwest. Appropriating images from nature and popular culture and fusing them into a single picture, she manages to find common ground for both, through relations people have with each other and the environment. Deedee’s illustrations are lovely portraits of humanity, presented through an effortless and easily comprehended visual language.
If you love what Deedee Cheriel did for Shepard Fairey’s fashion project as much as we do, know that all of the pieces are available online at OBEY CLOTHING web store.
