With a great passion for the arts and a thirst for creativity, Colombian artist Aníbal Vallejo pushes the boundaries of painting by delving into its materiality and formality. Moving beyond conventional painting tools and techniques expands the creative possibilities of Vallejo who aims to find new forms to be integrated into the process. Employing such elements as threads, fabrics, jewelry, industrial embroidery and especially hand embroidery, he creates outstanding mixed-media works that are rich in texture and only limited to his imagination.

Across the Boundaries

Born in 1975, Aníbal Vallejo earned his degree in fine arts from the University of Antioquia, Medellín, in 1996, and then in fashion design from the Colombian College of Design, also in the city of Medellín in 1999. After graduation, he spent ten years in Europe and the United States, further developing his skills as a painter and participating in exhibitions. Vallejo’s training, as a plastic artist and fashion designer, influenced his artistic practice and he became interested in elements outside the world of painting that he tries to bring into the work. Fashion raw materials as sewing thread and fabrics result in elements in the paintings such as dresses, animals, flora, and fauna, or abstract shapes in his most recent pieces. The most of lines, shapes and textures in his paintings are made of these materials.

The Art of Reinvention

Vallejo’s paintings are often perceived as three-dimensional objects, rather than a two-dimensional support, treated with a needle and a thread to become embroidery works of minimalistic patterns. Although Vallejo’s early works were more figurative, his recent series mostly include abstract minimalistic pieces. He takes as a reference his earlier works abstracted into fragments. The idea of reinventing has been inspired by the years the artist spent in the UK, Spain, Italy, and New York City. Wherever he relocated, he had to start from scratch – to learn another language, meet new people.

Beyond the Traditional Approach of Art Making

Aníbal Vallejo has exhibited his pieces throughout his native country, as well as beyond in Italy, the United States, Mexico, Spain, and France. Most recently, his work was included in a group show Transborder, and in a duo show Memoria entre líneas (Memory Between Lines) along with Iván Castiblanco. The both shows were on display at Fabien Castanier Gallery in Bogotá, Colombia. Talented and promising artist, Vallejo creates stunning pieces of art that examine the transitory elements of shape, color, form, and context within art making. Combining embroidery, laser etching, patchwork, acrylic and charcoal on fabric, he creates his own technique outside the traditional approach of art-making.

The artist is represented by Fabien Castanier Gallery in Bogotá.

Aníbal Vallejo lives and works in Medellin, Colombia.
