Chris Dean is a Detroit-based artist with a studio practice dedicated to lenticular work. His interest in the lenticular printmaking evolved from early experiments with stereoscopic imagery at San Jose State in the 1990’s and has grown to include a range of methods for creating motion 3D lenticular.
Chris Dean received his BFA in Photography from Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, Michigan in 1992, and his MA in Multimedia Computing from San Jose State University, San Jose, California in 1997. He teaches courses in stereoscopic imagery at the University of Detroit.

Lenticular Printmaking

Chris Dean works almost exclusively with lenticular printmaking, a technique that creates illusionary qualities of depth and motion on flat two dimensional panels by joining carefully constructed imagery and sheets of optical plastic. Viewed from certain angles, lenticular images create the illusion of having a third dimension thus establishing the effect similar to holograms. Exploring lenticular unique qualities, Chris Dean’s aesthetic and conceptual interests are rooted in art that leans towards the psychedelic, with bright colors, a busy canvas and a curiosity of subjects difficult to pin down. His practice is an eclectic mix of modern movements, from the expressive ones, to the pop or decorative styles. Dean’s prints are built with a specific intention to engage to viewer and leave an impact on an individual level that is interpreted in many ways.

Chris Dean at Krause Gallery

Chris Dean is represented by Krause Gallery where he will held his next solo show The Speaking In Tongues presenting his newest lenticular prints. Inspired by the Freak out, a concept that involved expanding ones perception by saturating their senses with unfamiliar stimulants, Chris Dean’s artworks seem to be the stimulants looking to evoke different memories in visitors at Krause gallery in New York. Chromatically rich, eloquent prints by Chris Dean are inter-playing with the views perception evoking different impressions in every individual in the audience. The Speaking In Tongues will run from June 20th to July 12th, 2015.
One of Dean’s earlier shows at the Krause Gallery was held in 2014. Entitled 22nd Century, the exhibition presented Chris Dean’s work as well as the work of Eric van Straaten.
