Giacomo Costa is an Italian artist primarily concerned with photography, which he often digitally alters in order to generate a futuristic urban landscape. These fantastic, apocalyptic images borrow their aesthetic from science fiction literature and film, where architecture takes on a colossal scale. Pulverised landscapes and lonely structures that inhabit anonymous cities are constant element in this series, a metaphor for the depersonalization that affects contemporary metropolises whose buildings soar above the human scale.

Giacomo Costa was born in 1970 in Florence, Italy. In his early age, he studied violin until the age of 14. From his youth years up until he was an adolescent he was interested in number of things, from motocross and motor bikes to climbing mountains, an activity that led him to photography, as he started to take photos of mountain tops. After a while he began experimenting with self-portraits and his sexuality. In 1994 he met Spanish photographer Richard Nieto who thought him a special technique in photography. After a brief period of Polaroid experimentation, Giacomo became faamiliar with computer technology which provided him a necessary inspiration for his future works. He began to create a series of landscape photos altered with the presence of digitally produced huge blocks.

In 2006 he took part in the X Architecture Biennale of Venice. In October his work has also been shown in the exhibition “Le Peintres de la vie moderne” at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and his work has remained in the permanent collection of the museum. In April 2009 the publisher Damiani published an anthological monograph on his work, with a preface by Sir Norman Foster and an essay by Luca Beatrice. In June 2009 he has been invited to represent Italy at 53rd Venice Biennale.

His work has been reviewed by the following international magazines: El Pais, Es (cover), Digital Photo, Ru (cover), Silver Shotz, Uk (cover), Exit, Es (cover), Evolo, Usa, Photography, Korea, Photo magazin, D., Art, D., Frame, A, C-Photo magazine, Uk.

Giacomo Currently lives and works in Florence.
