Jeffrey Cortland Jones is an abstract painter from America whose works are composed of large planes of white and almost white colors. The selection and the application of paint represent the major characteristics of Jeffrey Cortland Jones work as he tends to push color to their limits. The artist lightens his colors just before the moment they turn white and layers them over fully saturated paints to let the transparency peek trough.

Street Art Beginnings of Jeffrey Cortland Jones

Jeffrey Cortland Jones is a formally trained artist. He studied Fine arts at University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where he got his Bachelor of Fine arts degree in 1998. After that, he went on to finish Master of the Fine arts program at the University of Cincinnati where he graduated in the year of 2000. The artist entered the art world through skateboarding, punk rock, and graffiti. The artist used to paint on the streets and one of his favorite things to do was to place tags on places where he knows they would cover them up. This was the very beginning of the artist’s exploration of colors as the artist only did that to see which color they will use to cover it up. He also had the tendency of spending time observing the bleaching of the paint caused by the sun rays, a phenomenon that many of his enamel on acrylic panel paintings and paper works will later replicate.

Just like many abstract artists before him, Jeffrey Cortland Jones creates works with a variety of degrees, and intensities but always keeps the characteristics of his trademark style

The King of White

At first glance, Jeffrey Cortland Jones the artist’s pieces are composed of an array of white, yellow, orange and blue shapes, but upon closer inspection, we can see the tension between them. You’ll notice that the white are not truly white but rather silver and slightly gray. His color fields appear as paint bleached to its limits just one step away from turning into white. The unusual angles on which he paints his color planes that are always a bit off from the 90-degree angle create the tension in his imagery and make the viewer question the balance of the composition.

The skillful use of white is inspired by and closely related to the bleaching of the paint caused by sun rays
