Nicolas Demeersman aka Jolipunk is a French photographer, filmmaker and publicist. Born in 1978 in Seclin, north France, Jolipunk makes photographs in the form of series, using the absurd to criticize contemporary society.
Jolipunk is best known for his series of photographs titled Fucking Tourist, made in a period from 2009 to 2014. Demeersman has photographed local populations all around the world in a very particular way: with their middles finger up at the camera. The idea for these portraits came to him when he was on a trip and asked to take a picture of one of the locals. The native refused, stating that he had posed for a photograph once and found his face on a postcard, as though he was an “object of folklore”. At that moment the phrase Fucking Tourist came to Jolipunk’s mind and he decided to make a series of photographs. He captured portraits of citizens from every corner of the world, including Cuba, Peru, Jordan, Lebanon and many more. Artist then uploaded the photos onto a blog, accompanied by a brief snippet of the conversation with locals leading up to the image.
The White Lady series
Jolipunk’s subjects often integrate a stranger body, wearing a costume, out of context or very offbeat. The White Lady is series of work in which the artist questions the idea of the mythical and foreign body through the legend of the “White Lady”. Artist presents entirely white, faceless women in places such as dense forest, lonely mountain peak, sandy desert, and empty road.
In other series of works, Jolipunk explores themes such as reinvention of roles within the family unit, and the act of wearing the burqa, among many others.
