New York-based artist Paul Pagk is an abstract painter dedicated to exploring the limits of traditional notions concerning grace, proportion and compositional balance. By observing his work, Pagk wants us to grasp his thought process, to be aware of how his ideas change and adapt to different, both tangible and intangible, aspects of the canvas. Such a complex relationship is probably best explained by the artist himself, albeit his explanation is a little abstract in its own right:

Seeking to articulate notions of time and space, the viewer accesses the painting while being kept on edge by events occurring within, the original perception by body and mind, a starting point on a journey into the painting.

The Artist’s Road to Acceptance

Paul Pagk was born in Crawley, England, during the year of 1962, to a Czech father and an English mother. Since mom was a painter herself, she often took her son to museum visits during these early years of Paul’s life – something that proved to be quite influential over the following years. Pagk studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France, between the years of 1978 and 1982.

Upon his graduation, Paul founded the 55 rue des Panoyaux space in the Ménilmontant neighborhood of Paris, a working space for artists that Pagk established in an old foundry. A year later, the aspiring painter met the French gallerist Jean Fournier, who actually became one of his first collectors. During the September of 1988, Pagk moved to New York City where he settled in a rented artist loft. What was supposed to be a one-year stop became a long-term stay as Paul spent the majority of his subsequent career working in the Big Apple.

The Abstract Work of Paul Pagk

In The Pleasure Principle, Franklin Sirmans wrote the following concerning Paul’s art:

The English painter Paul Pagk courageously paints beautiful geometric abstractions at the end of the millennium in spite of the current fascination with global works of representation.

And indeed, Pagk’s work does appear as if it was made during the latter half of the last century. His gradually built-up surfaces reemphasize the quality of the paint itself, extending upon it the main role within the artwork’s hierarchy. Franklin Sirmans also noted that Paul’s works take the audience on an art historical ride from Russian Constructivists like Kazimir Malevich, to the deductive abstractions of Ad Reinhardt and Barnett Newman in the 1950s, to the conceptually-influenced monochromes of Robert Ryman. Yet, Pagk’s style is surprisingly capable of avoiding any burdensome odes to modernist or postmodernist longing.

To Pagk, the ritual of painting is a crucial aspect of the completed work. He often works on a single painting for more than three months, so he obviously spends a lot of time getting the absolute most out of every composition. More than several awards are a testament to such quality work – Paul is the proud receiver of Prix Fénéon (1987), Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (1998), Sheldon Bergh Prize (2000), Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation Grant (2012), Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (2012), and Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grant (2014).

Relavent Both in the US and Overseas

At their core, Paul Pagk’s paintings focus on both the connotation of doubt, as well as strength. With such a center of focus, it’s hardly surprising that his work was regularly exhibited both in the United States and in Europe. Such an international status is probably the most interesting thing about Paul’s oeuvre – although he is considered to be a quintessential New York painter, his work still continues a strong European resonance.

Paul Pagk lives and works in New York City, US.
