Paulette Tavormina is a well-known American fine-art photographer. Tavormina is famous for her series, Natura Morta, which features photographic imagery inspired by 17th century Dutch, Spanish and Italian Old Master still life painters.

Tavormina was born in 1949 in Rockville Centre, New York. Her interest in photography grew out of a 1980’s request by a New York public relations firm to photograph a visiting celebrity. She then took an introductory class at the International Center of Photography in New York. After moving to Santa Fe, New Mexico, Tavormina took a class in black and white photography and darkroom technique, and became a commercial photographer, specializing in historical Indian pottery and Navajo jewelry.

She adapted her food styling experience to become a prop and food specialist for Hollywood films including The Astronaut’s Wife, where part of her work involved creating elaborate food scenes. While in Santa Fe, Tavormina became fascinated by the work of Sarah McCarty, a Santa Fe-based still life painter and was introduced to the works of 17th century Old Master still-life painters Giovanna Garzoni and Maria Sibylla Merian.

Amidst the bustle that defines the city, she can often be found at one of the city’s many farmers markets searching for the perfectly imperfect flora that characterize her photographs. Her arrangements often recall the sumptuous detail of seventeenth century Old Master still life painters and serve as intensely personal interpretations of timeless, universal stories. With a painterly perspective reminiscent of Francisco de Zurbaran, Adrigen Coorte and Giovanna Garzoni, Tavormina creates worldly still lives.

Tavormina’s photographs are in museum, corporate and private collections and have been exhibited in Paris, London, Moscow, Lugano, New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Palm Beach, Boston and Chicago. Tavormina, currently photographs works of art for Sotheby’s and works as a commercial photographer. She has collaborated with The Fabulous Beekman Boys on three cookbooks, including the critically acclaimed The Beekman 1802 Heirloom Cookbook. Previously, Tavormina was a prop and food stylist in Hollywood, her work seen on the silver screen in films such as Nixon and The Perfect Storm.

Paulette Tavormina lives and works in New York City.
