Thijs Groot Wassink and Ruben Lundgren
March 2, 2015

WassinkLundgren is a collaboration between two Dutch artists, Thijs Groot Wassink and Ruben Lundgren. Thijs Groot Wassink born in 1981, and Ruben Lundgren, born in 1983, met while studying at Utrecht School of Arts in the Netherlands, but it wasn’t until after they both graduated in 2005 that they began to work together. Subsequently, Thijs Groot Wassink completed his Master Fine Arts at Central Saint Martins in London and Ruben Lundgren received his Master in Photography at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing.

The work of WassinkLundgren develops from small observations or humorous twists of situations from everyday life. Their starting point is always a social interest in the world around them, but equally interesting to them is how the medium of photography can deform reality. WassinkLundgren playfully subvert some of the unwritten rules of the medium. Their approach could be called ‘conceptual documentary’, where repetition, playfulness, investigating the medium of photography and collaboration are all important.
As in Tokyo Tokyo, a series of diptychs in which the decisive moment is approached in a lighthearted way. In this series, the duo catches its subject, from both sides. This duality discards the mythical ‘decisive moment’ of traditional documentary photography.

Their photo series titled Empty Bottles comprises portraits of ’24 scavengers attracted by the bottles we put in front of the camera’. The project captures real-life acts of recycling, largely unnoticed, yet integral to contemporary life in China.

The duo has had several group and solo exhibitions in The Netherlands and abroad. WassinkLundgren first exhibited at Foam in 2007. Their works has been exhibited in museums worldwide and they are the recipients of numerous awards, including the China Academy Award in 2010 and the Prix du Livre at Les Rencontres d’Arles 2007 for their publication Empty Bottles. Their work is represented by Pékin Fine Arts in Beijing. They are currently working on “The Chinese Photobook” exhibition. The Chinese Photobook is divided into six historical sections. It will delight and engage photobook enthusiasts with the excitement of discovery. The Chinese Photobook embodies an unprecedented amount of research and scholarship, and includes accompanying texts and individual title descriptions by Gu Zheng, Raymond Lum, Gerry Badger, Stephanie Tung, and Ruben Lundgren. The Chinese Photobook will also reveal much about China itself, and the country’s dramatic twists and turns during the last 150 years.

WassinkLundgren currently live and work in London and Beijing.
