Will Steacy is an American photographer and writer, one who focuses on social themes—he has documented the American landscape within the context of the 2008 housing and finance crises, pictured pockets of poverty throughout America, and noted how underserved communities organize and define themselves.

He received a B.F.A. from Tisch School of the Arts, New York University in 2003. Steacy comes from a line of newspapermen and union laborers, and so he has incorporated this heritage into his artistic mission and work—two series, “ Deadline” and “Ink In My Blood”, for example, document the history, working conditions, glory, and economic threats faced by The Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper. Much of his oeuvre therefore borders on the photojournalistic, despite being carefully crafted so as to convey the complicated circumstances of contemporary life in the United States.

Since the early aught, Steacy has exhibited his work widely, including in shows at the Noorderlicht Foundation in Groningen, the Netherlands, the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center, the Aperture Foundation in New York, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Steacy was a 2008 Tierney Fellow, and he was the recipient of the Juror’s Choice Award at from Project Launch. His work can be found in the collections of the Haggerty Museum of Art in Milwaukee, the Library of Congress, the International Center of Photography, and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans.

Steacy was named 25 Under 25: Up-and-Coming American Photographers by The Center for Documentary Studies and one of PDN’s 30 Under 30. His critically acclaimed books Photographs Not Taken and Down These Mean Streets were published in 2012. He is a recipient of The Aperture Foundation Green Cart Commission and Tierney Fellowship and nominated for the 2014 Rencontres d’Arles Discovery Award. His work has been featured in The New Yorker, Esquire, Harper’s, Mother Jones, The Paris Review, Aperture, Colors, Wired, Forbes, Time, Newsweek, Foam, The Guardian, HBO, CNN and he has been a guest on NPR, BBC and PBS.

Will Steacy lives and works in New York.
