Alias of Jasmina Sevic, a researcher and author for Widewalls. She graduated from the Faculty of Political Science (Department for Journalism) in Belgrade in 2013.

Yuken Teruya is a multidisciplinary artist who was born in Okinawa, Japan in 1973. Artist manipulates everyday objects, transforming their meanings to reflect on contemporary society and culture. Central features of his works include the idea of metamorphosis, and the subversion of expectations or traditional meanings.

He recived his MFA from School of Visual Arts, New York in 1999 and his BFA from Tama Art University, Tokyo in 1996. Using a variety of materials and media, from kimonos, to pizza boxes, newspaper articles, shopping bags and paper-cuttings, Teruya frequently creates meticulous and intricate art works, small and enchanting worlds, which relate to broader concerns. His works explore issues such as the growing consumerism of contemporary society, depleting natural resources and other problems associated with globalism, including the threat it poses to localized cultural traditions and identities.

In his series “Notice forest” from 2003, Teruya created delicate and intricate papercut trees, constructed from discarded bags. His concern was to point to the link between environmental problems and the ever-growing “family trees” of global corporations. Teruya’s use of commercial paper bags, be they from food chains such as McDonalds or high-end luxury stores such as Tiffany or Gucci, suggests a sense of comfort from the familiarity of the Brand whilst the unexpected metamorphosis of the object provokes surprise, awareness and discomfort.

Teruya has shown in many solo and group exhibitions in New York, Santa Monica, Berlin, London and Tokyo, to name a few. His work is included in the public collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Guggenheim, New York, Flag Art Foundation, New York, the Charles Saatchi Collection, London, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Japan, and the Mori Art Museum, Japan, among others.

He currently lives and works in New York, USA.
