Innauction - Modern and Contemporary Art Auction Analysis

June 14, 2015

Well, how to find a positive thing about an auction that failed to sell more than 55 percent of auctioned lot? And that’s just the case with Modern and Contemporary Art auction that was held on June 11 at Innauction auction house in Innsbruck, Austria. Well, perhaps, one of the rare positive things may be the fact that just two lots were sold under low estimate. Giulio Paolini’s Eclisse (II) had the highest hammer price, and was one of two lots that sold for a six-figure price. In fact, the hammer price of Paolini’s work was worth more than one-quarter of hammer prices of all sold lots combined.

Giulio Paolini’s Eclisse (II) (1976) and Arte Povera

Giulio Paolini is a world-wide known Italian artist, painter and sculptor. In 1966, when he was 26 years old, he associated with Arte Povera, a group of Italian artists. Through the use of everyday materials, the Arte Povera aesthetic sought a connection with the conceptual trends. The Italian art critic Germano Celant coined this term Arte Povera in the second half of the 1960’s, when Italian artists started to attack the established values in culture, industry and government. Two exhibitions were particularly important in that period, one organized in 1967 and the other in 1968, and those two exhibitions celebrated revolutionary art, free of convention, structure, and the market. Paolini’s Eclisse (II) is a very important work – adopting a Cartesian approach, Paolini investigates the illusory aspects of presentation, in order to disclose their paradoxical illusionism.

The Overview of Modern and Contemporary Art Auction at Innauction

Just 53 lots were sold out of 120 total auctioned works at Modern and Contemporary Art auction at Innauction in Innsbruck, which was just 44.2 percent. On a bright side, those 53 lots exceeded their estimated value total – the sum of hammer prices for sold lots was $864,938, and their estimate was set at $657,901 – $783,224. But, that was way bellow the estimate for the whole auction: $1,089,031 – $1,301,128. Twenty two lots sold over high estimate (41.5 percent of sold lots), 29 lots were placed in range of estimated values (54.7 percent), and just two lots (3.8 percent) changed hands for a price that was under low estimate. Giulio Paolini’s Eclisse (II) had the highest hammer price of the auction ($225,104), and the average hammer price of the auction was $16,320.
