Ana Bambic Kostov is an art historian with passion for contemporary art.

Intricate organic forms, entangled bodies or machinery, layered portraits, dissected genre scenes are all subject to meticulous analysis, signified in the markings of perfect ratio of nature. James Roper is a dedicated draughtsman and the researched of natural forms, whose work is coming to the Mirus Gallery for the first time, in a first solo exhibition of the artist since 2011. Curiously entitled The Inscending Spiral, new Roper’s body of work consists of overlapped planes of human, technical and geometric shapes, combined into elaborate drawings of either slight, or none coloration. Transparency allows the viewer to delve into the underworld of Roper’s idea, uncovering mathematical scaffolds of each natural form.

The Inscending Spiral is opening at Mirus Gallery on July 12 and it will run through August 9, 2014.

Roper the Storyteller

Observing works of James Roper requires undivided attention and the keen eye to look for the inner layers. Once the piece is grasped in its entirety, one can realize the wonderful potency of these drawings, conjured up upon the artist’s passion for storytelling. They are therefore veiled narratives, in which characters merge and communicate visually, while their nature encompasses MMA fighters as well as homeless women. Narration took Roper into the world of filmmaking, which he does on the side. His film “Outside” was shortlisted for the Vimeo Awards 2010, as the artist transfers his storytelling poetics into his main work – visual arts.

Inscending Tale

The Inscending Spiral follows the narrative invented by Roper through various media, depicting all of its particular fragments. His works encompass drawing, writing, painting, installations, graffiti, and video works, as the observer assembles pieces of the story by observing them individually, reaching the full comprehension of the narrative in the end. The Inscending Spiral story is founded upon the screenplay James Roper wrote in 2005 entitled “Nirodha Point”. As the story was full of implications of a much wider tale, he continued writing a prequel to it, but he never succeeded in putting it together literally. Instead, the artist decided to create a series of drawings investigating concepts of the commenced prequel, presenting them in their vague state in this exhibition.

Inward Spiral

The background of his images is infused with imagery taken from the obscure alleys and speedy freeway intersections of Los Angeles, while the top narrative runs parallely with multiple occurrences behind. The story follows odd and distorted spiritual roads of a rich youngster from Beverly Hills, a pornstar, a MMA fighter, a gang member, a celebrity publicist, a homeless lady, and an artist. Atmosphere of the complex simultaneous stories is enhanced by continuous tremblings of the Earth announcing another earthquake and unexpected maneuvers of an enigmatic LA gang called ‘The Labrys’. The culmination of The Inscending Spiral revolves around a car crash, the focal incident in which the key characters, Aidan Kincaid and Rosa De la Cruz, meet for the first and only time in this invented reality. The universe James Roper creates is the continuum of events, all intertwined and connected through invisible, comprehensive and otherworldly mathematical calculations, resulting in the final ratio of visually perceived events.
