The fall season has finally begun! September was truly exciting month (although we believe October will be even more exciting). The season of art fairs started, the season of auctions began, art festivals – the whole machinery of contemporary art scene is fully active after the summer break. But, let us not forget – so many amazing exhibition openings we saw in September. Some of the shows were organized by big and globally famous galleries and museums, some of them by smaller, yet extraordinary galleries. From San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami and New York City to Berlin, Paris, Cologne, London, Tokyo, Melbourne, Bangkok – amazing shows are on view.
Many of our readers have come on our website to check out what art events are being organized in all those great galleries whose work we are covering. As usual, in the end of every month, we present ten galleries that were most visited at WideWalls. So, let’s take a look – what galleries were most visited at WideWalls in September.
Ministry of Walls is based in Cologne and Miami. However, it is not only a street art gallery in these two cities. Ministry of Walls is the start point for every in street art interested person who collect the best street art artist. Apart from street art, Ministry of Walls is also sometimes specialized in Pop Art as well.
When you want to enjoy some great street art (and you find yourself in or near Cologne, Germany), then you probably visit 30works Gallery. Based in one of the centers of German and European contemporary art scene, this gallery offers a top-class collection of pop art and street art masterpieces. The gallery is perceived as a pioneer in the presentation of street art in western part of Germany. The gallery participated at the Art.Fair Cologne 2015 (in September), and is certainly finds its place among ten best contemporary art galleries in the city of Cologne.
Urban Spree is one of Berlin’s most vibrant art spaces. There is always something interesting going on in this great gallery. Set in a vast postindustrial compound in the heart of Berlin, the gallery promotes a grassroots artistic approach, working closely with street & graffiti artists, urban photographers and contemporary artists. At this moment, the gallery hosts solo exhibition of Hendrik Czakainski entitled Urban Investigations (open until October 18, 2015). Robert Fontaine Gallery is one of the best galleries in Miami. Founded in 2008, the gallery provides a platform for emerging, mid-career, established and master artists ranging in historical scope from the origins of Post War to the most current evolutions of digital media, conceptual installation and urban interventionist. Widewalls had an honor to speak with the gallery’s owner, Robert Fontaine, so be sure to check out this interview.
Dolby Chadwick Gallery from San Francisco had a great September. The gallery organized an exhibition of Michael Kenna entitled Forms of Japan (it was on view until September 26). October will be also a very exciting month for the gallery and it’s visitors. This great art space organizes a solo exhibition of Alex Kanevsky entitled Unstable Equilibrium (will be on view until October 31).
Hang-Up Gallery is a London-based gallery, founded in 2008, as online gallery. Today it is located in the bohemian neighborhood of Stoke Newington. In 2015, the team at Hang-Up Gallery took the decision to open a dedicated space housing a revolving collection of Banksy artworks. Still, Hang-Up Gallery is quite active in other fields as well. In summer, the gallery organized an amazing group exhibition of 16 great artists entitled Dog Days.
OPEN WALLS Gallery is one of the most important galleries in Berlin that focuses on public art. It’s also incredibly active. Just one small remark – do not forget that OPEN WALLS moved during the summer; the new address is Schröderstr. 11/1, 10115 Berlin, Germany. The gallery currently hosts the exhibition of Berlin-based artist Alaniz entitled The Street is a Mirror (on view until October 3). During the Berlin Art Week 2015, the gallery and PublicAidCampaign introduced No Ad App on mobile phones, in order to replace Berlin’s top ads with digital art using augmented technology.
Azart Gallery is located in the Chelsea Art District at 617 West 27th Street, New York City. The venue is part of the historic Terminal Stores building which has been beautifully refurbished while maintaining many of its original features from the 1880s. The gallery is dedicated to the promotion of national and international artists. At this moment, the gallery hosts the group exhibition entitled More Than Words (until October 3).
BC Gallery from Berlin is founded in 2013, by Nick Bargezi, a sound designer and art collector from Basel Switzerland and is managed by Phillipp Barth. The Berlin based gallery has since established itself in the high-end urban and contemporary art market, featuring regular solo and group exhibitions by internationally renowned and upcoming contemporary artists. It was an interesting summer in the BC Gallery. The art space organized an exhibition of Axel Void, entitled Sehnsucht.
44309 Street//Art Gallery is an art gallery and agency, focusing on urban contemporary like street art, graffiti, urban art, contemporary art. Some of the big names that are represented by the gallery are MadC aka Claudia Walde, Alice aka Alice Pasquini, Belin, Mark Gmehling, Reso and Telmo & Miel, the Dutch duo that in June had their exhibition titled Glove Stories.
