The 57th October Salon in Belgrade is scheduled to take place in September and October 2018, and, judging by the names of participating artists and the amount of preparation put into it, this event already promises to be one of the Balkan's definite highlights.
This year's Salon will be titled The Marvellous Cacophony and it will be based on the idea of chaotic yet functional diversity. It will place the Belgrade art scene into an international context, whilst simultaneously referring to the complex cultural and socio-political situation of the Ex-Yugoslavia region.
Planned to take place at numerous venues around the Serbian capital, the 57th October Salon will be curated by Danielle Kvaran and Gunnar B. Kvaran.
The main concept of The Marvellous Cacophony will be based on a fact the Western understanding of contemporary art became universal and that, although many artists emerged since the turn of the millennium, we're still awaiting for someone to make a truly revolutionary step forward. Yet, the 57th October Salon will not necessarily insist that this is a bad thing - The Marvellous Cacophony will also be celebrating the variety of styles, notions and techniques contemporary artists possess.
Above all, The Marvellous Cacophony will do its best to create meaningful narratives about art and culture, social issues and politics. It will explore the worldwide artistic production, looking into diverse art scenes and different generations of living artists creating work at this very time.
The upcoming exhibition had a long and drawn out process during which the curators carefully selected artists fitting to participate at the event. As a result of such a selection and the special accent placed on creative diversity, The Marvellous Cacophony will be an opportunity to see artworks extremely varied in type, form, structure, material, technique, device and content.
The 57th October Salon will be curated by Danielle Kvaran and Gunnar B. Kvaran. The two will have the challenging assignment of exploring the contemporary artistic production of an extremely wide range, taking into account different scenes and generations. This is why the event carries the title it does - cacophony means a harsh discordant mixture of sounds, and the 57th October Salon will definitely resemble a functional version of such a description.
Despite some apparent critiques of the contemporary world of art, The Marvellous Cacophony will primarily be a celebration of the artistic diversity we enjoy today. The event will be an opportunity for the visitors to see some of the globe's finest artworks, as well as a chance for some artists with totally opposite and even conflicting ideas to present works side by side.
Some of the most famous names that will participate are Yoko Ono, Olafur Eliasson, Cindy Sherman, Larry Bell, Anselm Kiefer, Takashi Murakami, and Hito Steyerl.
The 57th October Salon, with its theme The Marvellous Cacophony, will take place between the 14th of September and the 28th of October 2018 in Belgrade, Serbia.
The main part of the event is scheduled to unfold at the Belgrade City Museum, but the extensions of the Salon will be open to the public at the Cultural Centre of Belgrade, the Serbian Academy of Art and Science, the Remont Gallery and U10 Gallery.
