The Mechanics of Dreams at Galerie Nicolas Xavier

December 8, 2017

Bringing together the immersive works of Arnaud Liard and Sébastien Preschoux, the upcoming show at Galerie Nicolas Xavier will feature a rich selection of art that explores the way we interpret the mysteries of our dreams.

This exhibition, titled The Mechanics of Dreams, will actually be the first time these two artists share the same stage, which is somewhat surprising as Liard and Preschoux are close friends and even work in the same studio.

It will present us with an opportunity to explore the new aesthetic issues interwoven between the two artists who collaboratively tackled the popular and very challenging theme of dreaming.

Interpretation of Dreams by Arnaud Liard

Born in 1975 in Gennevilliers, Arnaud Liard perfected his artistic eye during the 1980s when he was a part of the local urban art scene.

Greatly invested in the graffiti culture of France, he based a lot of his current practice on the shapes and colors of the street art world he called home for years.

Since then, Liard combined his visual standards with other influences, particularly those found in his explorations of De Stijl and the Scandinavian art. Many of these creative characteristics can be seen in the artist's diverse mixes of graffiti, object design and graphics.

In many ways, the works this French painter prepared for The Mechanics of Dreams will demonstrate all of the artistic influences he was exposed to over the years. These works will yet again show us how Liard is capable of breaking down realistic landscapes into fragments of abstraction.

For this exhibition, he decided to present us with the results of a new approach to making art. The pieces appear to be damaged somehow, looking like walls with missing fragments - this is, of course, a metaphor of how dreams are nothing more than memories with missing segments which, no matter how hard we try, can never be recovered.

The Permanent Uncertainty of Sébastien Preschoux

Born a year before his aforementioned colleague and friend, Sébastien Preschoux is also a completely self-taught artist. He spend the last ten years of his career developing the foundations of his practice primarily based on the concepts of optical and kinetic art.

Naturally, he was heavily influenced by the Op Art movement, but Preschoux also states that Bauhaus played a major role in his development.

Within the very core of this man's practice can be found a constant tendency for experimentation - sure, there's a strong sense of color hierarchy in Preschoux's abstract compositions, but the permanent uncertainty of the final result is what drives Sébastien's creativity.

Sébastien Preschoux will present eight pieces at The Mechanics of Dreams, all of which were results of the artist's willingness to experiment. Through these works, Preschoux demonstrates his views on the topics of buried desires and secret fantasies, two main pillars of dreaming.

Besides gathering an extraordinary assortment of artworks made by these two abstract painters under the same roof, the upcoming show will also feature a temporary installation set in the heart of the gallery. It will allow the viewers to immerse themselves in the mechanics of dreams.

The Mechanics of Dreams will be open to the public between the 9th of December 2017 to the 20th of January 2018 at Galerie Nicolas Xavier in Montpellier, France.
