The 47th edition of Art Basel, contemporary art world’s premier platform, will once again gather some of the most renowned galleries, curators, artist, dealers and collectors. As one of the most important art fair since 1970s held annually in Basel, Miami Beach and Hong Kong, Art Basel showcases the world’s leading art shows for modern and contemporary works. Each edition in each city is unique and defined by host city and region, which reflecs on participating galleries, presented artworks and parallel programming which is always produced in collaboration with local institutions. Basel will once again become a global center of contemporary art, drawing tens of thousands of visitors from all around the world. This year, Art Basel will feature 286 galleries from around the globe, and each show’s singular exhibition sectors will highlight the latest developments in visual arts, providing visitors new ideas and inspiration.
This year’s curator of Art Basel’s Parcours sector will be Samuel Leuenberger. Through site-specific sculptures, interventions, and performances by renowned international artists and emerging talents, Parcours sector will engage with the historical neighborhood of Basel. Leunberger’s rich curatorial experience includes work with Stephen Friedman Gallery, the institution Kunsthalle Zurich, Pro Helvetia, a major live art exhibition 14 Rooms, the Department of Culture of Basel- Stadt and the interdisciplinary festival Les Urbaines in Lausanne. In addition, he has been running non-profit exhibition space SALTS in Birsfelden in Switzerland since 2009. Being very familiar with the city and highly active in its cultural scene, Leuenberger will be an excellent choice for the position of the third Parcours curator. The historical centre of the city will once again become activated by contemporary art and large-scale interventions and simple gestures will be presented to the broader public.
The 47th edition of the leading art fair in Basel will present works from 286 leading international galleries from 33 countries. The works will range from early 20th century to today’s contemporary artists. The main sector of the show entitled Galleries will feature 220 galleries presenting diverse works from the fields of painting, sculpture, drawing, installation, photography, video and editioned works. Eight galleries exhibiting for the first time will join the long list of returning exhibitors. Be sure not to miss booths of Blum and Poe, Contemporary Fine Arts from Berlin, Gagosian Gallery, Dominique Lévy Gallery from London and Paris, Victoria Miro from London, Pace Gallery from Hong Kong, New York, London and Beijing, White Cube from London and Hong Kong, and many others.
Dedicated to prints and limited-edition works, the Edition sector will feature 16 galleries specialized in these fields, including Pace Prints from New York and Paragon from London among others. Presenting galleries with precise curatorial projects, the Feature sector will present both historical and contemporary works. With 32 galleries of which eight new to the show, the highlights include a restaging of Jannis Kounellis’ seminal work ‘Da inventare sul posto’ (1972) presented by Luxembourg & Dayan from New York and London, a selection of works by Mira Schendel presented by Bergamin & Gomide from São Paulo, a selection of works on paper, paintings and sculptures by artists from the West Coast's Beat Generation Jay DeFeo, Wallace Berman and Bruce Conner presented by Galerie Frank Elbaz and a selection of very rare Pop works by Robert Smithson presented by James Cohan Gallery from New York demonstrating the breadth of Smithson’s cultural interests and combining the sacred with the profane. The Baloise Art Prize will go to up to two artists exhibiting in Statements and it will be announced during the show in June.
Art Basel’s unique platform entitled Unlimited and dedicated to projects that transcend the limitations of the traditional art fair stand will be curated by Gianni Jetzer for the fifth year in a row. Art Basel’s Film program featuring films by and about artists will be curated by Maxa Zoller and it will take place at Stadtkino Basel. Taking place in the auditorium within Hall 1, the extensive program of talks and panel discussions entitled Conversations and Salon will offer first-hand information on the world of the . The 11th edition of Design Miami Basel running from June 14th to June 19th in Hall 1 South on the Messeplatz, will present more than 50 galleries exhibiting historic and contemporary design, as well as a rich program of commissions, talks and satellite shows. As a part of the Museum Shows program, museums of Basel such as The Kunstmuseum Basel, Fondation Beyeler, Schaulager, Kunstmuseum Basel, Kunsthalle Basel, The Vitra Design Museum will present various significant exhibitions.
Art Basel will take place from June 16th till June 19th, 2016 in Basel in Switzerland. The vernissage by invitation only will be organized on Wednesday, June 15th from 3pm to 8pm. Messe Basel is the largest and most important exhibition site in Switzerland and it features a new hall designed by renowned international architect Herzog & de Meuron of Basel.
