As the upcoming US Presidential elections are approaching, the stakes are high for both the Republican candidate and current POTUS Donald Trump and his Democratic opponent Joe Biden.
A group of leading international artists has partnered with eBay to try and encourage an increase in voter turnout this November, by releasing an exclusive, artist-designed series of fine art bandanas.
The new campaign, called Artists Band Together, will support organizations working to educate, register, and mobilize voters by giving them 100% of the sale proceeds.
A total of 15 artists you know and love has joined the Artists Band Together campaign by submitting an original design for a bandana that can be worn or put on display, aiming to “inspire young people, first-time voters, and historically disenfranchised communities of color to get out the vote.”
The artist coalition, gathering “like-minded citizen advocates dedicated to the principles of democracy,” includes world-renowned artists such as Shepard Fairey, Jenny Holzer, and Luchita Hurtado, who has just passed away. All of the earnings from the bandanas’ sales will go to organizations such as Mijente, Rise, and Woke Vote.
In a statement, curators Amanda Fairey, Jill Goldman, Nora Halpern, Asti Hustvedt, and Victoria Kennedy say they “turned to artists and the compelling power of art to carry the bandana’s activist spirit into the future as a sign of banding together—not only for the sake of public health in the midst of a global pandemic, but also for racial, social, environmental, educational and economic justice, for women's, immigrants', disability and LGBTQIA rights.”
Through a dedicated eBay page, you can now get individual, three curated sets, or even all of artist-designed limited-edition bandanas for democracy through November 1, 2020.
The first set of bandanas (at $35 each, $175 for 5 in a set, or $525 for the full set) was released on August 17, including artworks by Marilyn Minter, Juliana Huxtable, Shepard Fairey, Umar Rashid, Jenny Holzer, Christina Quarles, Luchita Hurtado and Rirkrit Tiravanija.
The second release is coming on September 1 and will include designs by Alex Israel, Victoria Cassinova, Xavier Schipani, Christine Sun Kim, Hank Willis Thomas (For Freedoms), Merritt Johnson and Barbara Kruger.
