The Broad Museum opening would be impossible without an excellent conduction of the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation. The Foundation is founded in 1984, and has made more than 8,000 loans to over 500 museums and galleries around the world. Elli Broad and his wife Edythe have two collections – one belonging to their Art Foundation, with around 1,500 works of modern and contemporary art, and a personal one, with nearly 600 works. This famous billionaire philanthropists and art collectors are quite well known for their contribution to art. In 2012, they donated 26 million dollars for the replacement of the old Kresge Art Museum in the school’s art building, and Michigan State opened a new one and called it The Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum. For the Broad Museum in Los Angeles, the couple decided to finance the $140 million worth building to host the amazing collection of the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation.
The Broad Museum is designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro. With its innovative “veil-and-vault” concept, the 120,000-square-foot building will feature two floors of gallery space to showcase The Broad’s comprehensive collection and will be the headquarters of The Broad Art Foundation’s worldwide lending library. Additionally, the Broad has also built a 24,000-square-foot public plaza adjacent to the museum. When it comes to the artists whose works will be presented at the museum; well, the list is just amazing. The Pop art of the 1960s will be represented through works by Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha and Andy Warhol, among others. The collection of 1980s is plentiful with the works of Jean Michel Basquiat, Cindy Sherman, Keith Haring, Barbara Kruger and Jeff Koons.
