Cecilia Alemani Chosen to Curate Italy’s Pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale

Art News

April 26, 2016

With the 2017 Venice Biennale approaching, it is that time of the year again – the time when the curators for the pavilions are being chosen. The Italian Pavilion need not worry, as Cecilia Alemani, the Chief Curator of High Line Art and the Donald R. Mullen Jr. Director has been chosen to curate for the upcoming Venice Biennale. This news was first reported by the Italian publication Artribune, which noted that Cecilia Alemani is the first woman in a while to curate the pavilion, as the last three people to supervise the project were Vittorio Sgrabi, Bartolomeo Pietromarchi, and Vincenzo Trione. The visitors of the prestigious contemporary art exhibition will be offered the opportunity to be taken through the presented works by one of the foremost curators, who just also happens to be a woman making it in a man’s, man’s world.

Cecilia Alemani – The Perfect Choice

Alemani is most famous for her work in the United States, as she has been the Chief Curator of High Line Art in New York since 2011. She was invited into High Line after founding the independent contemporary art festival called No Soul For Sale in 2011. She also worked as a curator for Frieze New York, which is, of course, one of the most prominent contemporary art fairs. She has curated for them since the fair’s inceptions on the Randall’s Island in 2012, and the projects she has commissioned for 2016 will be on display at next week’s fair. Cecilia Alemani first fell in love with the field of contemporary art when she graduated in Aesthetics from the Università degli Studi in Milan. She moved to New York in 2003 in order to get a Masters in Curatorial Studies for Contemporary Art from Bard College and realized that New York City is the center of the art world when talking in terms of contemporary artworks, and that it is the Mecca and hub of some of the best museums, art galleries, non-profit spaces, and artists.

Italian Pavilion Wrapped in the Veil of Mystery

Apart from knowing the name of the curator for the Italian Pavilion, no other details about the artists chosen to represent this country have been announced. However, the first woman after Ida Gianelli to curate the show, Cecilia Alemani along with her husband Massimiliano Gioni make a curatorial dream team which will definitely do a stellar job and represent Italy in the best way possible. Alemani is known for her collaborations with numerous international galleries, including the Tate Modern, MoMA, and Palazzo Grassi. However, it is yet unknown which criteria were applied in the decision process of the 2017 Biennale curator. All we know it that it will be Alemani, just as we know that the United States will be represented by Mark Bradford and that the United Kingdom has chosen Phyllida Barlow.
