Germany's Venice Biennale 2022 pavilion just got among the highly anticipated ones, as Maria Eichhorn was chosen to represent the country. Yilmaz Dziewior, the director of the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, was announced previously as curator.
A Bamberg-born and Berlin-based artist, Maria Eichhorn first came into the spotlight in the 2002 documenta 11 in Kassel, curated by the late Okwui Enwezor. Titled Maria Eichhorn Aktiengesellschaft [Maria Eichhorn Public Limited Company], the work represented a public limited company with a special status that prohibited it from increasing its capital. Similarly, the Rose Valland Institute founded by the artist in 2017 at documenta 14, researches and documents the dispossession of Europe’s Jewish population even today.
