In Focus Next Week: February 9 - 15

February 8, 2015

The week of Valentine’s is special this year - the most love-infused day of the year is preceded by the most horrific date - Friday the 13th! For the superstitious, the days ahead promise a rollercoaster, but as for us - we only see an exciting art-ride ahead. Prior to the March art fair frenzy, urban art movement is getting its own celebratory event, Art Wynwood 2015, while the dreaded Friday will welcome new show by Antony Micallef at Lazarides Rathbone. Kicking off the very colorful week, a show oozing visual alchemy is opening at Blain|Southern in London welcoming Ali Banisadr and his surreal, abstract, chimerical realities. Paul Kasmin gallery announced the show by Ron Arad, presenting a series of his crushed Fiats 500, pressed like flowers. Finally, phenomenal homages to both Malkovich and a series of the celebrated photographers composed and shot by Sandro Minelly will open as well at Fahey/Klein Gallery in Los Angeles.
The impression is - a magical week is to come, in one way or another, and we invite all to live it through art!

Ali Banisadr

At Once

Opening: February 11

London, UK

...Ali Banisadr is Iran born artist whose childhood was marked with the experiences of the Iran-Iraq War and Islamic revolution. One of his first paintings, in his own words, were illustrating the sounds of bombing and air-raids. “As soon as I apply the brush, the sound begins”. His works painted in oil that will be presented at the Blain|Southern Gallery during the At Once exhibition (including the 7-metre long triptych, his largest work to date) can easily be heard: the sounds of them are complex, there is no main sound which underlay during the entire melody (just like there is no protagonist in the image) but a lot of dub tunes permeated with tiny, light melodies. This synaesthetic element of his works is what makes them so exceptional and mosaic...

Ron Arad

In Reverse

Opening: February 12

Paul Kasmin Gallery

New York, USA

...People of New York have already been introduced with the work of the 64 year old industrial designer, artist and architect, as he had his exhibition No Discipline in MoMA in 2009. Now the visitors of Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York will be able to see his exhibition In Reverse. It can be argued that not many of the almost four million original Fiat 500 cars produced has left “alive”. And apart from those cars whose owners had the time, money and patience for restoration and modernization, the rest of them are useless and probably finished in junkyards as scrap metal. But Ron Arad gave them new meaning, new purpose and new value. His sculptures of the old Fiat 500, made of steel, glass, leather, plastic and vinyl, shows that everything that man made can be recycled (or ‘upcycled‘) and repurposed: what was someone’s family car fifty years ago, today is someone’s piece of art...

Sandro Miller

Malkovich, Malkovich, Malkovich

Opening: February 12

Fahey/Klein Gallery

Los Angeles, USA

...Wanting to pay an homage to the great camera artists who helped shape his artistic style and career, photographer Sandro Miller set out on an interesting journey with actor and longtime friend John Malkovich. The two first met in the late 1990s, coming to create one of the most intriguing and elaborated projects today. Sandro, like an excellent movie director with a vision and Malkovich, an impeccable transformer and interpreter, produced a striking body of work throughout the sixteen years, containing perfectly composed shots that place Malkovich in different characters and settings. Their latest encounter resulted in reinventing forty one of the most famous world photographs after a year-long research and hard team work that included professionals from many fields...

Antony Micallef

Opening: February 13

Lazarides Rathbone

London, UK

...The Self solo exhibition at Lazarides Rathbone marks a departure in style for Antony Micallef as the artist has stripped away any excess and has set about exploring himself in a series of works purely through the paint and his energetic gestures that bring to mind the portraits of Frank Auerbach in their visceral approach. For those that love to sink their teeth into heavy layers of thick brushstrokes and violent attacks on the canvas, then the Self exhibition by Antony Micallef promises to be a real treat as the impact and brutality of the marks that construct these self-portraits cannot be ignored as they scream at you from the gentle backgrounds they are escaping from. In Self, Antony Micallef is presenting his soul and feelings purely through the mark making of the painting process leaving the viewer to dissect and question the self-portraits...
