Le Faucheur

August 11, 2018

This object was made in 1943 and Picasso decided to use the technique of assemblage to sculpt the original plaster version. André Malraux, famous French author and Picasso’s contemporary perceived this bronze cast as an incarnation of the "act of death".

Twenty years later, at the opening of the exhibition Hommage à Pablo Picasso at the Grand and Petit Palais, the artist expressed the desire to produce a monumental object devoted to Charles Baudelaire. More than a decade after that, Le Faucheur was donated by Picasso's heirs to the national collections.
