C’est ça! is the title of a forthcoming exhibition by graffiti art duo Raphaël Borer and Lukas Oberer at the Speerstra Gallery located in Bursins, Switzerland. The new exhibition at Speerstra Gallery, that originally opened in Monaco during 1984 and specialises in showing graffiti and street art through group and solo shows, will present a series of works by the graffiti duo Raphaël Borer and Lukas Oberer who have moved successfully from creating traditional graffiti into studio based artworks. Speerstra Gallery has presented exhibitions by a number of the big names in the world of graffiti and street art including the impressive Kaleidoscope group show (that included Smash 137, Mist & Jana & JS), the Gratia Plena exhibition by Aurel Rubbish, Back to Metal by John ‘Crash’ Matos and and an OBEY Print Show with the works of Shepard Fairey.
The new exhibition at Speerstra Gallery, C’est ça!, by graffiti art duo Raphaël Borer and Lukas Oberer, demonstrates how the art duo have forged a new career in contemporary art while also staying true to their background in graffiti and street art. The graffiti art duo still work on the streets creating large murals in their distinctive abstract style that has been complemented since 2007 by studio based works that are created on canvas, paper or wood. The studio based works of Raphaël Borer and Lukas Oberer contain all the elements of their graffiti and street art based murals, compositions that focus on abstract surface change, the sweeping gestures of a spray can combined with strong shapes that want to break free from the canvas, but sometimes restrained by a rigid grid like structure placed across the paintings that when seen brings to mind the steel shutters on shop fronts. The graffiti art duo work on pieces with a give and take attitude, cooperation and a process of permanent exchange that sees the individuality of each artist combine into one coherent artwork as seen in the new exhibition at Speerstra Gallery. Other artists who have gone from the street to canvas include JonOne (Evolution to Oils) and Niels Shoe Meulman (Shoegazing).
Graffiti art duo Raphaël Borer and Lukas Oberer, born 1984 and 1982, both developed their distinctive styles by being involved in the graffiti and street art scene from the early 1990’s where they learned their trade like many others by painting graffiti on walls. Their first works as an art duo appeared in 2007 and over time they have developed a unique way of working that sees them working with coordinated cooperation on art works while still retaining the individuality of each artist. The thinking behind the work of the graffiti duo is quite simple, to allow their graffiti and street art inspired compositions to break free from the constrictions of the canvas or building façade they are working on and to give the shapes and colours the space they deserve. The works of art duo Raphaël Borer and Lukas Oberer are born out of social interaction and common experience that is presented in a colourful, unique and abstract way. Check out the work of some other art duos: How & Nosm, Herakut, Tim Noble & Sue Webster and Kai & Sunny.
C’est ça! by Raphaël Borer and Lukas Oberer opens at Speerstra Gallery on 7th March, 2015 and runs through until 25th April, 2015.
