Top 10 Galleries of May

June 4, 2015

As we enter June, it is time to take a look back at significant happenings in the world of contemporary and street art that took place during May. In this article, we will focus on galleries and we are going to present the list of the most visited gallery pages (on our Widewalls Galleries section) by our readers during May. For many, the previous month was a month of art fairs and other big art events (opening of the Venice Biennale). We had an amazing art week in New York City (with several important art fairs, such as Frieze New York 2015); London hosted Art15 Art Fair, and so on. Yet, we wrote about so many interesting exhibitions held both in some of the world’s most renowned galleries and in those more oriented towards street art and underground culture. So, the top 10 galleries of May weren’t included in the list just because some of them participated in some art fair, but also because they organized some truly amazing shows.

The rise of popularity of street and urban art may be identified in the fact that more and more galleries are becoming interested in street artists. We wouldn’t make a mistake if we said that street art has become a part of the mainstream within contemporary art. As so many contemporary art galleries opened their doors to the street artists and their works, urban art has become more reachable for collectors, art lovers and dealers. Don’t be surprised when you see our list; many of the galleries you will find here are specialized in street art. So, scroll down, and take a look at the most visited gallery pages on our Widewalls Galleries section in May.

Galerie Zimmerling & Jungfleisch in Saarbrucken

City of Saarbrucken, the capital city of Saarland (near the border with France), should be proud of its rich cultural and art scene. When it comes to urban contemporary art, Saarbrucken is also quite interesting, thanks to the Galerie Zimmerling & Jungfleisch. Apart from curating exhibitions and selling art, Zimmerling & Jungfleisch arranges façade paintings and works with businesses or private clients. If you find yourself in or near Saarbrucken, be sure to visit the group exhibition of LX.One, Remi Rough, Poesia and Augustine Kofie called Ambiguity, that is on view from May 28th until July 18th.

Galerie Geraldine Banier Paris

It’s almost impossible to list all the great art galleries in Paris. To name them all, we would need a lot of space. It’s Paris, after all, one of the global art centers. One of the galleries that position the city of light at the very center of global contemporary art scene is Galerie Geraldine Banier. With its five years of existence, this gallery presents about twenty contemporary artists stemming from the emergent scene. One of the main features of the Galerie Geraldine Banier is its focus on the plurality of the artistic languages. Focused on the question of the transversality of arts, the gallery often hosts live performances executed by artists, dancers, musicians and actors. For everyone who likes the plurality of art expression, Galerie Geraldine Banier is the perfect place to visit.

Pretty Portal Dusseldorf

Dusseldorf-based gallery Pretty Portal has become one of the most important urban art galleries in Germany. It was founded in 2007 and is focusing on urban contemporary art. As the gallery describes itself, Pretty Portal is presenting and documenting a fast-moving, radical new art direction (urban art). Gallery owner and curator Klaus Rosskothen sees Pretty Portal as a fusion of street and White Cube, a metalevel where urban art meets gallery visitors and collectors. The gallery has worked with a long list of international artists including Btoy, Fin Dac, Natalia Rak and Pixel Pancho.

Art is Just a Four Letter Word Soest

Probably one of the galleries with the most interesting name, art is just a four letter word is an terrific art space located in Soest, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The gallery was founded by Patrick Droste and David Radon, who themselves come from an urban art background. Since the founders of the gallery were street artists, they know perfectly well the problems that young urban artists are facing, and the gallery attempts to help them. We recently wrote about the exhibition of Bates, entitled Style in Progress, taking place at art is just a four letter word.
