The highly expected opening of the Yayoi Kusama Museum is finally here, as the institute will be ready to unlock its gates for the first time on October 1st. The museum has a plan to organize two exhibitions of Kusama's works annually, alongside lectures and various other events of diverse nature that can not be classified as full-blown shows. The inaugural exhibition at the Yayoi Kusama Museum will put the focal point on Kusama's newest painting series titled My Eternal Soul, but viewers will also be able to see pieces from her other projects as well. The first ever exhibition at the newly-founded Yayoi Kusama Museum will be called Creation is a Solitary Pursuit, Love is What Brings You Closer to Art.
The inaugural exhibition of Yayoi Kusama Museum will focus primarily on the 16 works from the artist’s latest series of paintings, My Eternal Soul. Creation is a Solitary Pursuit, Love is What Brings You Closer to Art will also feature 27 works from the artist’s Love Forever series of black and white drawings that formed the precursor to Kusama’s latest project, a brand new pumpkin sculpture and an original installation conceived specially for this exhibition. The show will have an aim to narrow its focus and address the proliferating array of ideas in the later, more recent stages of Yayoi Kusama's career. It will give visitors a chance to learn about the battles she fought as an avant-garde artist, allowing them to experience and feel the sincerity of her ideas, namely of saving the world through emotions.
Due to the museum's exceptionally original architectural design, some directions will be necessary to anyone lucky enough to be in Tokyo during the time of Creation is a Solitary Pursuit, Love is What Brings You Closer to Art - the second floor of the Yayoi Kusama Museum will display works from the monochrome drawing series, the third floor will present works from the colorful My Eternal Soul series, the fourth floor will showcase a new mirror room titled PUMPKINS SCREAMING ABOUT LOVE BEYOND INFINITY and the fifth floor, which is essentially a rooftop, will be hosting the new sculpture titled Starry Pumpkin. This unique show will definitely be Japan's highlight of the year as far as contemporary art is concerned.
Founded by the avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama and solely run by the Yayoi Kusama Foundation, the new museum plans to exhibit her works and related materials for decades to come. This ambitious journey will start with Creation is a Solitary Pursuit, Love is What Brings You Closer to Art, a show that will open on October 1st, 2017, and close on February 25th, 2018, at the Yayoi Kusama Museum in Tokyo, Japan. It should be noted that entry to the show will be by time slots, so buying tickets in advance is highly recommended.
