Mediterranean Cruise: 10 Art Hotels You Have to Visit
As our artistic journey around the world progresses, in search for only the best art hotels in some of the most exotic destinations, we wounded up on the wonderful coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It was difficult to pick only ten of the most incredible art hotels along the coast, as our extensive database contains a much larger number. We started exploring the area with our Art Travel Special dedicated to Barcelona and its marvelous art scene full of surprises. But before we found ourselves in Europe, we visited the West Coast and its art hotels, as well those on the East Coast – the city of New York, to be more precise, so check them out while here. In the meantime, have yourself an early holiday and check out the 10 best art hotels overlooking the Mediterranean Sea from three European countries.
Urban Spaces Art Hotel Ibiza
On the Spanish island of Ibiza there is a facility which prefers calling itself an art project, rather than a hotel. It’s the Urban Spaces Art Hotel, and although not big at all – only 15 rooms – all 15 of them are their own works of art. Many different street artists helped this boutique art hotel look as amazing as it is today, including INKIE, Chapter, JEROM, N4T4, Nicolas Dixon and Yasmina, among others. Great time is also guaranteed through a series of DJ music events on their private roof terrace for guests only.
Au Vieux Panier Art Hotel
Over in France, in the very heart of Marseille’s historic Le Panier district, you will find Au Vieux Art Hotel, in an old, seventeenth century building now transformed into a contemporary artwork. We’re not kidding – each room has been given to a contemporary artist as a workplace, and as a result, art pieces in the form of wall drawing, sculptures hanging from the ceiling or emerging from the floor became the vital part of the rooms. In this hotel, it is certain you will feel like you’re inside of an art gallery.
Hard Rock Hotel Ibiza
Going back to Ibiza, it’s hard to miss out on seeing the Hard Rock Hotel, located in the d’en Bossa Beach. With 493 rooms, it gives a spectacular view of the Mediterranean Sea. Its amazing design is definitely appealing, and the facility also offers the outdoor setting perfect for concerts and similar events which are organized every week. Now we’re intrigued!
Hotel La Ponche Saint Tropez
You could call the Hotel La Ponche a true historical landmark of Saint Tropez. This gem of the Mediterranean Sea hosted artists like Simone de Beauvoir and Pablo Picasso back in the day, and even now it is a favorite of many celebrities because of its specific spirit and its beautiful location – opened onto the sea, the La Ponche square is the soul of Saint-Tropez’s old village. The five-star hotel offers a great view and beautifully decorated interiors, where each corner takes you back in time.
Es Mares Hotel Formentera
In the heart of Formentera, one of Spain’s Balearic Islands, you can find Es Mares Hotel, in all its Mediterranean spirit. It was built and opened in 2011, taking its name from the sandstone that gives the island its rugged contour. Each of their rooms has been designed in a contemporary manner, but without departing from the island’s characteristic charm. The hotel is also known for their splendid spa center and its great design, offering the best a relaxation facility can offer. A perfect place if you wish to get lost on a still authentic island and in one of its best hotels.
Hotel Pacha Ibiza
Because one can never have enough fun in Ibiza, there’s Hotel Pacha, a luxurious yet minimalist hotel which opened in 2003. The hotel is proud to offer all kinds of events, ranging from disco presentations or collections to fashion shows, daily and extraordinary celebrations, as well as photographic and film platforms – apart from great accommodation, of course. Beautifully designed on the outside, as well from the inside, the hotel has 53 Junior design suites featuring works of photographer Toni Riera, and two Superior suites of top quality.
Hotel Ermitage Saint Tropez
The Hotel Ermitage in Saint Tropez is a retro facility which conjugates art, whim and vintage furniture. Its 24 rooms and suites, all unique by their decoration, were designed by artists and designers such as Marc Newson, Jean Pigozzi or Paul and Chloé Sevigny, so that every room has its own identity. Within them, original prints by Irina Ionesco co-exist on the walls alongside more contemporary yet equally controversial photographers such as as Terry Richardson. The hotel also supports the arts by providing young artists with yearly and monthly residencies.
Brondo Architect Hotel
With its modern, bohemian-chic design. the Brondo Architect Hotel in Palma de Mallorca is one of the finest destinations of the Old Town. The hotel features an art gallery called Art District with permanent collections and temporary exhibitions. The exhibition area creates a centre of artistic and cultural life inside the hotel and it represents a new benchmark in the world of contemporary art in Palma.
