Wow. Just wow. These latest auctions that took place in Europe really didn’t go well – some were OK, some were average, and some were unsuccessful. Perhaps it was due to a recent slight strengthening of the euro against the dollar, or the lack of guarantees, which is more likely. This might change soon, if the whole thing with Greece doesn’t go well, which would cause the new weakening of the euro. However, we didn’t have an auction that was that bad as it was Contemporary Art Auction at Millon & Associes in Paris. More than 70 percent of lots weren’t sold and that information alone is quite enough to depict just how bad this sale was. Christo’s The Pont Neuf Wrapped had the highest hammer price of the auction, followed by Sam Francis’ SFP94-82.

The Story About the Artist: Sam Francis (1923 – 1994)

Samuel Lewis Francis was an American painter and print maker who occupies a prominent position in post-war American painting. On leaving the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1944 owing to illness Francis took up painting as a hobby. He decided to make this a serious undertaking studying under David Park in 1947 and completed his BA and MA at the University of California. He was greatly influenced by Abstract Expressionism particularly the works of Clyfford Still and Jackson Pollock. In his use of space on the canvas to allow free circulation of strong color and the sensitivity to light Francis developed his own style by the time his studies had ended. Francis moved to Paris in 1950 where he met Jean-Paul Riopelle who was to remain an important influence, and study of Monet’s Waterlilies had a profound impact on his work. From a very muted palette of greys and whites he returned to the qualities of light and color producing such works as Big Red 1953. He returned to California in 1962 and was then influenced by the West Coast School’s preoccupation with mysticism and Eastern philosophy. Blue had become a more dominant feature of his work since 1959 inspired by personal suffering and the great joy of becoming a father for the first time in 1961. This led to combinations of hard color and more disciplined structures with centrally placed rectangles during the 1970s. Eventually these more rigid structures gave way to looser configurations sometimes of snake-like forms with web-like patterns. Blue, sometimes brilliant, remained an important part of many later works.

During the last year of his life, suffering from prostate cancer and unable to paint with his right hand after a fall, in a final burst of energy he used his left hand to complete a dazzling series of about 150 small paintings before he died.

The Overview of Contemporary Art Auction at Millon & Associes

Where to start, when the sale is this bad? Out of 261 auctioned lots, only 77 were sold, or just 29.5 percent. The total of $654,628 that were gathered was, of course, way bellow the projected auction value ($1,649,697 – $2,098,192). Nineteen lots were sold over high estimate (24.7 percent), the majority of artworks were sold in range of estimated values (48, or 62.3 percent of sold lots), and 10 lots were sold under low estimate (13 percent). Christo’s The Pont Neuf Wrapped had the highest hammer price with $117,397 (almost 18 percent of total sale), Sam Francis’ SFP94-82 was sold for $50,313, Chu Teh-Chun’s Composition went for $46,959, and Farhad Moshiri’s Amphora changed hands for $32,983. The average hammer price of the Contemporary Art Auction was $8,502.

Speaking of lots that exceeded expectations, Lucio Del Pezzo’s Sans titre from 1971 was sold with +450.3 percent, and was the most successful piece of the auction. Nicolas De Staël’s Méditerranée doubled its high estimate (+100 percent), Guy De Rougemont’s Sans titre was sold with +75 percent, Léon Zack’s Sans titre with +62.5, and Albert Ayme’s Sans titre with +50.1 percent.
