MTO Online Auction
Known for his stunningly executed giants, lurking from of the most unusual places, MTO has been traveling the world extensively leaving his mark all over. His passion for large-scale supports his mastery in the mural painting techniques, but conceals his true nature. It appears that the contemporary urban illusionist MTO is composed of contrasts, since his recent first ever solo exhibition displayed small scale works only, executed entirely in the combination of black and red, his signature colors. The event was hosted by Galerie Monsieur in Paris, serving as a ten-day preview between September 18 and 28 for the main culmination coming in the form of Online Auction scheduled to begin TODAY, October 1, 2014.
MTO the Illusionist
An obvious perfectionist, MTO developed a unique photorealistic technique in depiction of his gigantic characters. The environment is completely incorporated into the work, as the painted figures seem to emerge from it, tricking the eye into believing they posses much more tactile volume. His three-dimensional endeavors, as well as his works in LA, Miami, or the recent ones in Riga and Tartu, Latvia, uncover the itinerant personality behind the MTO moniker, and the continuous thirst for creation. His technique in production of the miniature works differs significantly, best explained through a promotional video for the show.
MTO’s exhibition debut was entitled Cold Blood, alluding to the scale of degeneration of humanity. We’ve all become distant, much more prone to hatred and extremist behavior, while we show little compassion for the true troubles in the world. Sometimes we don’t even perceive them as such – they’ve become a normal part of life. Through his series of 30 small scale pieces, surprisingly small for MTO, the artist tells the story of our environment addressing it on global level, whereas each of his pieces serves as a concrete critique of a defined problem. Moreover, the works are all connected with certain articles by the means of a QR code, which when scanned, takes the observer to the source of the issue. The style is comic-like, resemblant of newspaper illustration, or caricature of sorts. In this light, the tiny, shiny, red and black paintings are both the mirror and the tool for opposing any kind of severe notion, from the right-wing propaganda, to the glorification of money, trends and everything superficial.
Self-Produced Exhibition and Auction
Creating in total independence, MTO put together the show sponsoring himself, but with a decision to auction off each piece separately in order to continue the free self-production in the future. Pieces displayed at the Monsieur Gallery were not available for sale then, but only as of tonight in an Online Auction. This interesting occurrence where artists sell their own art directly may just become common in the future art market.
