Once Upon a Time

1989
New York City, United States

In 1989, just months before his untimely death of AIDS-related complications, Keith Haring left his perhaps most personal and surely most sexually-charged mural. Titled Once Upon a Time, this epic NSFW mural was painted in the men’s bathroom at the LGBT Community Center located in 208 West 13th Street, New York. As a tribute to the 20th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots – an event considered as the start of the Gay Liberation and LGBT Rights movement – Haring covered four interior walls with his signature black-on-white line drawings of intertwined groping figures. The original mural, which was slowly deteriorating, has been restored recently, thanks to Tobias Meyer, Sotheby’s chief auctioneer, and his art advisor partner, Mark Fletcher.
