Sanja Lazic was born in 1990 in Belgrade, Serbia. Her interest in art comes from a very early age and although she didn’t have the talent to pursue it professionally, she enjoys every day working and writing about it. Her favorite urban artists are Interesni Kazki, Saner and Phlegm.

In the 80s, graffiti was at the beginning and New York was the place where it all started. Other parts of the United States didn’t know much about this new approach to art. When Sandro Figueroa Garcia aka SEN2 went to New York City in the 80s for the first time, the Puerto Rican teenager saw graffiti for the first time. He got hooked immediately. After falling in love with this new artistic style, Garcia went back to his home country and immersed himself in the subculture graffiti. In a time without the Internet, the only drawings and artworks created were those you picked up from black-and-white graffiti magazines. It is because of theses magazines Sen2 started learning about the craft and absorb the technique he would later put into practice. In 1986, while painting the streets of his hometown, he met a like-minded, up-and-coming artist named Rek. This was the beginning of graffiti becoming something more than an infatuation.

Becoming Part of the Crew

It was difficult for Sen2 and Rek to master graffiti, or aerosol art as it was called in Puerto Rico at the time, and it took them a lot of walls until they improved. Somewhere around this time, the duo met Ske and Soze, two more experienced graffiti artists who had what Sen2 and Rek needed to finally understand the craft. Together, they formed the Mad Crew that had a successful time in Puerto Rico before parting ways. Eventually, Sen2 felt like he had much more to offer and moved to the “Salsa Borough” of New York City, located in the South Bronx. Even though Sen2 left the place where he grew artistically, he never forgot it. However, his talent was so big that soon after arriving in NYC, he was asked to join the most famous graffiti crew ever assembled: Tats Cru.

With Tats Cru came opportunity; Sen2 traveled throughout Europe and the rest of the globe. He found himself creating art for music videos, working with high profile recording artists such as Jennifer Lopez, Nas, and Missy Elliot. He was even commissioned by Robert Deniro. By the late 1990s, his talent spilled over into the world of fashion, as he applied his design skills for companies such as Tribal Gear, Miss Sixty, and Wildstyle Technicians. He also started his own brands, The Sen2 Collection and the DirtyWaters Trade Company, which fulfilled a lifelong dream of representing Puerto Rico in the fashion industry. Over the years, Sen2 became one of the most sought after contemporary artists in the world who’s significant mark are his abstract paintings on display throughout America and Europe. In early 2012, he established Many Styles, a fully equipped design studio where he can create his own art with the same passion he had back in the 80’s. His latest display of passion is the exhibition entitled New York City Classic that features works produces in his studio. The solo show will take place at 44309streetartgallery in Dortmund, Germany on November 15th and will be on view until December 27th, 2014.
