Picasso 1932 - An Erotic Year in Life of the Great Painter on View

The very first exhibition dedicated to a single artist’s work created between the January 1st and December 31st of the same year, the show titled as Picasso 1932 presents essential pieces made by the legendary Spaniard either during the year of 1932 or somehow contextually connected to this period. Held at the Musée national Picasso Paris, this show was organized in partnership with the Tate Modern in London. Picasso 1932 invites the viewers to bask in the masterpieces of modern art and to follow his production of a particularly rich year in a rigorously chronological journey. The show will also put to test the famous statement that the paintings Picasso created during his lifetime were, in fact, a way of keeping a visual diary, which would mean that there is a remarkably strong correlation between the Spanish painter’s life and his creations.

Focusing On An Extremely Productive Year

With more than 110 paintings, drawings, engravings and sculptures prepared for the show, Picasso 1932 will display just how productive the year in question was for the artist. Among many milestones of 1932, this exceptional year is remembered for the series of bathers and the colorful portraits and compositions of Marie-Thérèse Walter, Picasso’s French mistress who served as his model until the year of 1935 and was the mother of his daughter Maya Widmaier-Picasso. In parallel with these sensual and erotic works, the artist also finds his way back to the theme of Crucifixion, cemented by a photographic reportage Brassaï performed in hisworkshop of Boisgeloup. This period of Pablo’s life was also marked by the Spaniard’s strong interest in fundamental ideas of Surrealism.

A Unique Chronological Journey

Picasso 1932 is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to walk in Pablo Picasso’s steps, to experience the life as he did, to witness it through the artist’s eyes. Organized in a rigorous chronological fashion, the show will follow him in his day-to-day creative process and life. The exhibition starts at a time he turned fifty and had already grown accustomed to being recognized as a controversial painter and a highly pivotal artist to his contemporary peers. The following journey takes the viewer through the prodigious creative push from the beginning of the year as Picasso was preparing for his first retrospective taking place at the Galerie Georges Petit in Paris. With his status already well-established, Picasso worked hard at proving his current works could stand shoulder to shoulder to his key masterpieces of the past. Honoring the period after the aforementioned exhibition, the Picasso 1932 show enters a stage of the artist’s career where relaxation was a central motif. His paintings became more soothing and the drawings turned idyllic. The summer of 1932 was marked by an interest in the female bather and we can follow her adventures and surprising metamorphoses until the autumn when a new theme, the Rescue, summarizes the year’s work.

Pablo Picasso Art Exhibition at Musée national Picasso Paris

Although this year of Picasso’s life is probably not the most crucial one of his career, one would be hard-pressed to find a more productive and diverse period of the Spaniard’s body of work. Celebrating this fact, the Picasso 1932 event, organized in partnership with the Tate Modern in London and held at the Musée national Picasso Paris, will be taking place between the October 10th 2017 and February 11th 2018 in Paris, France. The exhibition will be moved to Tate Modern next year, where it will be displayed during the month of March, 2018.
