Already impressively versatile, the Turkish artistic scene can count performance as one of its aspects on the rise – mostly thanks for Performistanbul.

Founded with the aim to unite performing artists under one roof and promote their projects, the platform will now enter a new phase with the Live Art Research Center, a place of archiving, documentation and exhibition of performance art, as well as one of research and resource.

Joining its foundation there will be Needed: You, a long-durational live process lasting for 672 hours with no intervals!

Celebrating Performance Art in Turkey

A total of 10 performance artists and 9 performances will be presented at the live process, this year curated by Simge Burhanoğlu. The visitors will be able to witness the execution of their pieces in person, encouraged to find their own state of mind in which a mutual nourishment with the artist(s) is established.

The goal of Needed: You is to reveal the raw material of humanity and to remind us of the most primitive feelings in us.

A long durational work has the power to trigger the transformation needed, and that’s why Needed: You presents the process itself instead of offering a resolution. The aim behind this objective is to have the audience involved in the process and to present a mutually nourishing, pure experience. The audience is expected to enter the door unbiased; find a place of their own and feel valuable.

Participating Artists and Performances

The line-up of participants at the 2nd edition of Needed: You surely promises unforgettable cultural experiences.

In AslieMk’s piece, the audience can witness two science people experimenting on the process of teleporting their clones of body-images from one point to another; during each of their attempts to teleport, these body-images separate and reunite.

Batu Bozoğlu also uses the audience, through speakers attached to his body which speak up as the visitors enter words. Similarly, Ekin Bernay takes the viewers to a healing journey to help them discover what they want from life.

In her performance, Ebru Sargın live-streams from her house, taking the stance of the observed, while Gülhatun Yıldırım focuses on the feeling of unease in moments she feels the gaze on her.

In Modesty, Ata Doğruel asks the audience to do the act of eating for him and through this he investigates the relationship between people and society, and Leman S. Darıcıoğlu in Looking after a rose eliminates the line between the performance and the actual life and investigates her personal physical, emotional and intellectual body, focusing on the themes of time, life and death.

Selin Kocagöncü builds a space where the audience can dance freely to the music.

Finally, Özlem Ünlü objectifies herself through mummifying process and through that investigates death and the hereafter; being objectified; limitations on freedom; creating your own freedom and questioning the power of herself and the audience.
