June 29, 2015

Contemporary Art Auction took place on Wednesday, June 24th, at Pierre Berge & Associes in Paris. On first sight, the results are not so impressive, since only 39.3 percent of lots offered at the auction were sold. On the other hand, if we focus on the lots that were sold, the total price of sold works exceeded the hammer high estimates for 3.5 percent. The most expensive lot was Fernand Leger’s Statuette de femme et plante, that was sold for $274,420.

The Art of Fernand Leger

Fernand Leger was a French painter, sculptor, and filmmaker. In his early works he created a personal form of cubism which he gradually modified into a more figurative, populist style. His boldly simplified treatment of modern subject matter has caused him to be regarded as a forerunner of pop art. He was quite active in all important art movements back in 1920s and 1930s, and he participated in discussions and dialogues about the future of art. Leger’s works are very popular today, and can be found in many famous art collections.

The Overview of Pierre Berge & Associes’ Contemporary Art Auction

Out of 178 lots offered at Pierre Berge & Associes’ Contemporary Art Auction, only 70 were sold, or 39.3 percent of the lots. Twenty-nine lots were sold over high estimate (41.4 percent of sold lots) – which is quite good result, while 35 were sold in range of estimated values (50 percent). On the other hand, six lots, or 8.6 percent, were sold under low estimate. The highest hammer price was seen in the sale of Fernand Leger’s Statuette de femme et plante (that we mentioned before) – $274,420. Average hammer price of the auction has settled at $24,045, while median hammer was at $8,065.

Speaking of the most successful lots, we should mention Robert Longo’s Black Flag, Jean Helion’s Composition, Hans Bellmer’s Composition and Jean Claude Farhi’s Etude pour Etat du couple and Untitled, that were sold for much higher prices from their high estimates: Longo’s work had +237.5 percent, Helion’s work had +216.7, Bellmer’s work had +205 and Farhi’s works had +140 percent difference. On the bottom side are César’s Nature morte, Hommage à Morandi Peinture sold with -20 percent difference between hammer price and low estimate, followed by Andres Serrano’s Piss & Blood XXVI (with -16.7 percent), Arman’s Encriers noirs (with -16.7 percent) and A-One’s Turmoil (with -15 percent). When it comes to high prices (apart from Fernand Leger’s piece), Jean Dubuffet’s Paysage avec trois personnages was sold for $263,219, while Andy Warhol’s Hamburger was sold for $89,606.
