Have you ever seen a photograph that left you breathless? Completely without words? For me, it was one of Ansel Adams’ landscapes. If you’re a fan of wise words about your favourite medium, make sure you check out this spectacular book, written by American writer, filmmaker, teacher and political activist Susan Sontag. One of the most highly regarded books of its kind, On Photography first appeared in 1977 and is described by its author as “a progress of essays about the meaning and career of photographs.” It begins with the famous “In Plato’s Cave” essay, then offers five other prose meditations on this topic, and concludes with a fascinating and far-reaching “Brief Anthology of Quotations.” It provides some insightful views on this kind of image-making through thoughts that are still relevant for photographers and collectors interested in the medium today, and it is an absolute must-have among the essays on art written by Susan Sontag.
